About Rifton

Rifton serves the disabled community as a leading manufacturer of products and equipment designed for people with special needs. The company needed a mobile strategy to better serve physical therapists, address the rest of Rifton’s loyal consumer base, and satisfy their own long-term needs.

Project Highlights

My role: Creative lead

Collaborators: Client, strategy team, UX designer, development

The approach: Get to know the detailed needs of Rifton’s users — not just those whose lives are made easier by the products, but their facilitators and caregivers

Research highlights: Surveys targeting physical therapists familiar with Rifton products; visiting Rifton development campus to see how their products are made

Featured deliverables: Market research, persona development, information architecture and clickable prototypes, design concepts

Considerations and learnings: Is a responsive approach the right mobile strategy for an e-commerce site that has highly personalized and customizable products? Would a native mobile approach be more effective in satisfying customer needs? Often, the need to hit sales benchmarks makes this a difficult but high-priority consideration.

The Outcome

From a design perspective, it was important for Rifton to capture the faces of the extraordinary group of people that use and facilitate the use of their products, and celebrate the caregivers’ tireless contributions, day in and day out. At the same time, we wanted to showcase the incredible quality and detail of Rifton’s product design. To accomplish both, my team and I leveraged Rifton’s incredible library of photography.

From a technical perspective, we created a responsive site users can now access from any device, configure Rifton’s highly customizable products based on their client’s specific needs, and instantly request a price quote for the final result. Additional online assets also include a resource center which can easily be searched by product category, broad topic or keyword tag, as well as an informational blog.
